Nevrik Azadian (Switzerland)

“Armenian Costume, History and Geography”

Born in 1950 in Tehran, Nevrik Azadian was taught by her mother, who owned a “Haute Couture” workshop and a school, the demanding and meticulous skill of dressmaking. At the same time, she studied dance, both classical and Armenian folk dance. In 1976, she left her native city to move to Switzerland.

Fascinated by Armenian art and culture, Nevrik decided to start teaching traditional Armenian dance, making the costumes with her mother’s help. Thus inspired, she then began in 1994 to gather the priceless elements and documents that became the cornerstone of this valuable work on Armenian traditional regional costumes and the geography of their corresponding regions.

In this work, young women, from the Armenian community in Geneva, wear the costumes created by Nevrik Azadian and her mother Omelia Shahnazarian.
