In his paintings, Garen Bedrossian links the structure of the abstract with the flow of the figurative. Seen from a distance, the works show roughly executed surfaces, in blacks, browns, gray and off-whites, all emotionally charged. Upon approaching the paintings, one perceives a personage in an indeterminate position. Is he hiding behind these colored curtains, or is he attempting to slip between them towards the light? It is left to the viewer to identify with the personage and to read his intensions. On account of this projection of uncertainly, it may perhaps be said that Garen's paintings assume an interactive role.
Garen Bedrossian's paintings are decidedly expressionistic. They achieve an added dimension by way of their intellectual content. Powerful gestural outbursts are tempered by the artists humanists approach to his subjects. The impression of doubt the works convey carries with it an indication of truth. This truth in turn provides a varnish of feeling.
Since graduating in 1977 from the Academy of fine Arts at Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, the painter has had a long and fruitful career. His works have been exhibited in the United States, Japan, Germany, Poland and many times in Canada.
