Anniversary evening at NAI

On October 16th, at 7:00 PM, Naregatsi Art Institute will host a jubilee evening dedicated to the 70th birthday of renowned kamancha player Hakob Khalatyan.

During the event, works composed for the kamancha will be performed by Hakob Khalatyan, and his creative journey will be discussed.
Hakob Khalatyan’s paintings will also be exhibited at the NAI Exhibitions Hall. He has about 540 paintings. He has had about 10 concert-exhibitions in Armenia and Russia.

Hakob Khalatyan graduated from the kamancha class (instructor: M. Khachatryan) at the Romanos Melikyan Music College in Yerevan in 1975, and from the folk instruments department (M. Khachatryan’s class) at the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan in 1986.

From 1977 to 1978, he served as concertmaster of the Armenian Folk Instruments Orchestra, and from 1978 to 1980, as concertmaster of the Kirovakan "Horovel" Song and Dance Ensemble; from 1982 to 2002 and in 2012, he was a kamancha player with the Armenian Radio Folk Instruments Ensemble; from 1995 to 1997, he was concertmaster of the Armenian Song and Dance Ensemble, and from 2009 to 2011, a soloist.

From 1983 to 1989, he taught kamancha at the Arno Babajanyan Music-Pedagogical College in Yerevan, and from 1987 to 2005, at the Romanos Melikyan Music College.

In 2016, at the concert dedicated to H. Khalatyan’s 60th anniversary, the distinguished kamancha player performed exclusively with the

Chamber Orchestra of Armenia (Artistic Director: Vahan Martirosyan); the concert took place at the Komitas Chamber Music Hall in Yerevan.
From 2017 to 2020, he worked in Artsakh (Shoushi and Stepanakert).

During his 50 years of creative career, he worked in various state orchestras and musical educational institutions.

He has created arrangements and adaptations for the kamancha, the kamani, and small ensembles.

Khalatyan was the first to perform large-scale works on the kamancha, including Aram Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto, Eduard Baghdasaryan’s “Rhapsody” for violin and symphony orchestra (performed in 1996 with the Radio Symphony Orchestra; artistic director: Ohan Durian, conductor: Davit Terzyan), Ruben Altunyan’s “Antuni” (composed for kamancha, chamber orchestra, and piano), and other works.

Armenian composers Robert Petrosyan, Khachatur Avetisyan, Ruben Altunyan, Stepan Shakaryan, and Manvel Beglaryan dedicated the works they composed for kamancha to Hakob Khalatyan, as the first performer.

He has toured in approximately 30 countries around the world.
